Presented in this gallery are the photos of the remains of the old town of Rakalj (Stari Rakalj). The site is dominated by ruins of an ancient castle, that had been built supposedly in the early 11th century. In the earliest known mentions the castle is referred to as “Castellare de Rachir”. Remains of an even older structure were found at the location of the castle.
The only well-preserved building in Stari Rakalj is a small church of St. Agnes. Stone carving on the front of the church reads 1495. Holy masses are not held in this church, but it is sometimes used for weddings.
Numerous fragments of stone walls are to be found all around the area.
The church of St’ Cross had been demolished in the early 20th century. In 1970, the walls of the church have been rebuilt. The inscription on the cross in front of the remains reads “Church of St. Cross 1970”.
The area is embellished by several stone-carved statues. There is a stone quarry nearby.
The pictures were taken in January 2022.
